3-seater sofa - dimensions, proportions, and placement in the living room

A 3-seater sofa is usually 200-240 cm wide. Check how to match its dimensions to the wall, how much space to leave for a coffee table and for walkways, and how to position it.

In the evening, you put your book down on the table, stretch your legs, and sit next to your loved ones. A 3-seater sofa is usually 200–240 cm wide and 90–110 cm deep; it is recommended to leave at least 35–45 cm of space around it for a coffee table and 60–80 cm for a comfortable passageway. Such proportions allow you to use the living room without squeezing between pieces of furniture.

Three seats do not always mean the same size. The width of a sofa is determined by the armrests, the shape of the sides, seat depth, and construction. Therefore, before buying, measure not only the wall but also the path you take every day to the window, dining room, or kitchen.

We design IWC HOME furniture so that its clean form brings peace to the interior, while the soft seat invites you to stay a little longer. View our available modular sofas and living room sofas if you want to compare layouts tailored to the rhythm of your home.

How to choose width and depth?

A 3-seater sofa should provide each seated person with about 55–70 cm of usable width. In practice, this means that a piece of furniture with a total width of 210 cm may have a different seating area than a model 230 cm wide if one of them has bulkier armrests.

Opt for a width of 200–220 cm if you want a compact frame and a clearly defined relaxation zone. A 220–240 cm variant offers more freedom when watching a movie together, having an afternoon conversation, or enjoying a family breakfast with a tray placed nearby. Above 240 cm, a sofa starts to dominate many standard living rooms, unless it is placed against a long, empty wall.

A depth of 90–100 cm is universal: you can sit comfortably with a book, yet it will be easier for you to stand up and work with a laptop for a while. A deeper frame, around 105–110 cm, is conducive to resting in a semi-reclined position. However, this solution will not work if the sofa is primarily intended for daily work at a low table or if it is used by people who prefer a more upright position.

Sofa dimension Practical range What to leave around it? A good choice when
Total width 200–240 cm 60–80 cm for the main passage You want to comfortably seat three people
Total depth 90–110 cm 10–15 cm from the wall when placed parallel You need space for backrests and breathing room for the frame
Distance to the table 35–45 cm Minimum 30 cm in a very compact arrangement You want to comfortably set down a cup and stand up easily
Zone in front of the sofa 160–200 cm with sofa and table 60–80 cm of additional traffic route The living room is also a path to other parts of the house

Measure the wall, but also mark the full outline of the furniture on the floor with tape. Add the depth of the table and the distance between them. This simple test will show you whether, after placing the sofa, you can still open the balcony door, walk to the table with plates, and maintain a calm rhythm in the interior.

3-seater sofa and the living room layout

In a living room of about 16–20 m², a three-seater sofa can be the central piece of furniture if its zone does not cross the main passageway. However, do not treat square footage as the only criterion. An 18 m² room with one wide passage will require more careful placement than a closed, rectangular living room of the same size.

The most natural layout is created when the sofa is parallel to the wall or defines the boundary between the lounge and dining areas. When placing it in the middle of a room, leave at least 80 cm of free space behind the backrest. This will allow you to pass without brushing against the furniture and will not turn the living room into a narrow corridor.

Morning coffee then has its steady rhythm: you sit on the sofa, put the cup down on the table, and do not have to push it away with your knee every time you stand up. When choosing living room tables, match their width to the length of the seat. For a 220 cm sofa, one larger table looks good, or a set of two smaller ones that you can move closer to the spot you are using.

The height of the tabletop should be close to the height of the seat or 2–5 cm lower. This makes it comfortable to set down a book, cup, or remote control. A table that is too high hides the sofa's profile, and one that is too low may be inconvenient during daily use.

A rug will help tie the relaxation zone together. Tuck it under the front legs of the sofa by about 15–25 cm or choose a larger format that covers both the sofa and the table. If the rug ends far in front of the furniture, the layout may look accidental, even if the sofa itself is the right size.

If you are furnishing a limited space, do not repeat the rules that apply to every small area. Check our separate guide on interior proportions, and here focus on actual passageways and how you use the room daily. A 3-seater sofa does not have to be against a wall, but it should always leave you with a comfortable path through the living room.

IWC HOME models and materials

In the IWC HOME collection, you will find the Core, Moyo, Loop, and Sendo models. Each one is worth evaluating not only by the length of the frame but also by the height of the backrest, the width of the armrests, and the way the sofa settles into a specific interior. If you are planning to change the layout later, consider modular collections that you can expand as needed.

Textured fabrics create a calm, tactile surface and work well with the simple form of the furniture. Before making a decision, order free fabric samples using the form on the website and view them at home in your own light. The same shade can look different in the morning by the window, in the evening by a lamp, and next to a wooden floor.

Pay attention to the construction, type of filling, and the height and color of the wooden legs in the selected model's specifications. These elements influence the sense of softness, the stability of the frame, and its visual lightness. Wooden legs in oak stains also help to connect the sofa with other furniture when you choose the same fabrics and wood stains throughout the interior.

Do not buy solely based on a photo. You will feel this particularly clearly after a long day, when one person wants to lean back high with tea, and another prefers to sit deeper with their legs tucked onto the seat. Visit one of the seven IWC HOME showrooms in Wrocław, Warsaw, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Gliwice, or Łódź and sit on the Core, Moyo, Loop, and Sendo models before making your choice.

It is also worth remembering that the price depends on the size, fabric, and configuration of the modules. Therefore, compare the full specification, not just the width of the furniture. See IWC HOME living room sofas and compare the dimensions with your room plan.

Choice according to needs

If the sofa is primarily intended to organize a representative living room, choose a proportion matched to the wall and leave more empty space on the sides. If it is meant to be the center of daily life, the actual width of the seat, convenient access to the table, and the possibility of expanding the layout will be more important.

  • Narrow wall 220–250 cm - choose a sofa with a width of about 200–220 cm to leave breathing room for the frame on the sides and access to sockets or curtains.
  • Long wall from 300 cm - consider a 220–240 cm model, keeping a minimum of 30 cm of free space on one side.
  • Living room connected to the dining room - position the sofa so that the passage to the table is 80–90 cm wide. At the table, leave about 60 cm of table width for each person.
  • Movie zone - plan the table at a distance of 35–45 cm and a rug tucked under the front legs of the sofa.

When choosing accessories, do not line everything up in a single row. Two smaller coffee tables allow you to change the arrangement depending on the day: one can stand by the sofa, the other by an armchair or closer to the person sitting on the edge. It is a simple way to achieve functionality without overloading the living room.

Frequently asked questions

What are the dimensions of a three-seater sofa?

A three-seater sofa usually has dimensions in the range of 200–240 cm in width and 90–110 cm in depth. The exact dimension depends on the width of the armrests, the height of the backrest, and the construction of the specific model. Before purchasing, check the total dimension as well as the width of the seat itself.

How much space to leave in front of a 3-seater sofa?

Leave usually 35–45 cm between the sofa and the table. If a main passage runs in front of the sofa, plan an additional 60–80 cm of free space. Thanks to this, you will pass freely even when someone is sitting at the table.

Will a 3-seater sofa fit in a 16 m² living room?

Yes, a 3-seater sofa can work well in a living room of 16 m² if it is about 200–220 cm wide and does not block a traffic route. Mark the table, rug, and a passage at least 60 cm wide on the floor. Square footage alone is not enough, as the layout of doors, windows, and the dining room is also decisive.

How to choose a table for a three-seater sofa?

Choose a table with a top at seat height or 2–5 cm lower and place it 35–45 cm from the edge of the sofa. For a frame 220–240 cm wide, one larger table or two smaller elements will work well. View tables for the lounge zone to compare proportions with your planned sofa.
