How to remove stains from upholstery? Coffee, grease, pen

Coffee, grease, or pen on the sofa? Check how to remove a stain without leaving a ring, where to start with each type of dirt, and how to choose the right method for velvet or bouclé.

Morning coffee spilled on the sofa, a dinner plate left too close to the armrest, or a pen left by a child on the seat - such situations happen in every home. Safely removing a stain from upholstery fabric means quickly soaking up the mess, gently drying without rubbing, testing a product in an inconspicuous area, and cleaning from the edge toward the center. Thanks to this, stains on upholstery have less of a chance to penetrate deep into the material's structure or leave a ring.

Do not react impulsively with a strong detergent from the kitchen or bathroom. Upholstery fabric can react differently to water, alcohol, grease, and intense rubbing, especially when it has a distinct texture or a soft pile. Before using a preparation, check the recommendations for your specific upholstery and perform a test in a place that is not visible during daily use.

At IWC HOME, we design sofas to provide the home with a calm, comfortable base for everyday life. However, it is worth remembering that even a carefully selected fabric needs the right reaction after coffee or sauce is spilled. Below you will find a practical guide: stain by stain, without repeating general rules for cleaning the entire sofa.

How to remove a stain from upholstery?

For every fresh stain, start with the same sequence. Collect the excess mess with a spoon, the edge of a paper towel, or a clean, light-colored cloth. Do not push the liquid into the seat and do not spread it to the sides, as this enlarges the stain.

  1. Stop the stain - apply a dry paper towel until it stops absorbing moisture or grease.
  2. Check the upholstery - identify whether you have velvet, bouclé, or a structural fabric. Also, look at the fabric manufacturer's recommendations.
  3. Perform a test - apply a small amount of the agent to a hidden part, for example, on the back of a cushion or near the bottom edge of the furniture.
  4. Clean locally - work from the outer edge of the stain toward the center, using small blotting motions.
  5. Dry evenly - after cleaning, blot away moisture with a dry cloth and leave the material to dry naturally.

The most common mistake is wetting only the center of the mess and leaving a wet ring around it. It is the difference between the damp and dry parts of the fabric that often creates a visible ring. If you are using a preparation, apply it sparingly, and finally, gently even out the humidity in a small area around the stain.

Choose a product from the Care category based on the type of stain and always read the instructions for use. Household dish soap, baking soda, laundry stain remover, or chlorine-based preparations can discolor the fabric or change its structure.

Coffee, grease, and ink

The type of stain determines the first step. Coffee requires quick drying, grease requires pulling it out first, and a pen mark requires a very careful test of the preparation. The table below allows you to make a decision without the risk of accidentally smearing the stain.

Type of stain What to do immediately? How to clean? What to avoid?
Coffee and tea Apply a dry paper towel until you have collected the excess liquid. After testing, use an agent intended for upholstery fabrics. Work from the edges toward the center and dry after each stage. Hot water, intense scrubbing, and soaking the entire cushion.
Grease, olive oil, sauce Remove solid residue with a spoon. Then gently blot the greasy mark with dry paper. Reach for a preparation chosen for greasy stains, after a prior test in an inconspicuous area. Water as a first step, because it may spread the grease further.
Pen and ink Do not rub. Secure the area with a clean cloth so the ink does not transfer further. Use only an agent tested on a hidden fragment. Blot with a cloth instead of making circular motions. Alcohol, acetone, and random solvents without testing.
Red wine Immediately collect the liquid by applying a paper towel. After drying, use an upholstery cleaner according to the instructions, always from the edge of the stain toward the center. Salt, which can remain in the weave, and hot air, which fixes the discoloration.

When stains on upholstery are old, dried, or of unknown origin, act even more cautiously. Repeatedly applying different agents often gives a worse effect than one thoughtful attempt. If a shadow remains after drying, do not repeat aggressive cleaning several times in the same day.

Some stains can leave a permanent mark, especially if the dye, grease, or ink has had time to penetrate the fibers. This is a fair limitation of home care: not every mark can be removed without the risk of changing the color or texture of the upholstery.

Fabric and choosing the agent

Velvet, bouclé, and structural fabrics show moisture differently and react to touch differently. Therefore, do not automatically transfer a method proven on one piece of furniture to another. Always evaluate the behavior of the specific fabric after a test.

Velvet has a soft pile on which the direction of the fibers may be temporarily visible after cleaning. After it has fully dried, gently smooth the surface in the direction of the pile, without forced brushing. Do not soak the material, as a local difference in sheen may be more visible than the stain itself.

Bouclé creates a looped, expressive surface. Do not scrape the mess with your fingernail and do not use a rough sponge, as you may pull out or damage the loops. Apply a soft cloth and collect the mess in stages.

Structural fabrics have a weave in which particles and pigment can settle deeper. First, remove dry residue without rubbing, then clean locally. It is in this type of material that an uneven moisture border is especially easy to form, so control the amount of preparation used.

When choosing sofas, it is worth thinking about the home's daily rituals. If you often eat on the seat or live with small children, order free fabric samples and look at them in your own light. You will then see not only the color but also the texture of the velvet, bouclé, or structural fabric and how the material reacts to touch.

Products from the Care category help maintain caution with daily messes, but they do not replace testing on a hidden fragment. If you are unsure about the fabric's reaction, stop after the test instead of risking greater discoloration.

Everyday life without rings

In the evening, when a book, a cup of tea, and a soft blanket land on the sofa, the risk of accidental spilling is part of normal life. Keep light, absorbent, print-free cloths nearby and keep them in an easily accessible place. A colored towel can transfer pigment onto damp fabric.

During shared dinners, place the table or coffee table so that about 40-45 cm remains between its edge and the sofa. Such a distance facilitates comfortably setting down a cup and limits the need to reach over the seat. Leave at least 60 cm in the passage around the relaxation zone so that dishes, plates, and children's toys do not catch on the upholstery while passing by.

Do not cover the freshly cleaned area with a blanket, cushion, or throw. The material must dry evenly, otherwise, rings or a change in the arrangement of the pile may appear. Do not speed up this process with a hair dryer set close to the fabric or a strong heat source.

If you are planning a cohesive relaxation zone, choose modular sofas and choose the same group of fabrics for them that you are considering for the rest of the interior. The same fabrics and wood finishes in different furniture help build a harmonious whole, and wooden legs in oak finishes are easier to match to a calm arrangement. Remember, however, that a light color and heavily textured bouclé may require more attention if daily life at home often involves eating on the sofa.

Regular, gentle care reduces the risk that stains on upholstery will become a permanent element of the interior. Vacuum seats with a soft attachment and react immediately to fresh messes before they have time to dry.

Frequently asked questions

Can coffee be removed from upholstery with just water?

For fresh coffee, first dry the liquid with a dry paper towel. Water alone can enlarge the wet area and create a ring, so after a test in an inconspicuous area, use an agent intended for upholstery fabrics. Clean in small stages and let the material dry naturally.

Why does a ring appear after cleaning?

A ring most often forms when a fragment of fabric has been unevenly soaked or the cleaning agent has remained on the surface. Clean from the edge of the stain toward the center and use a minimal amount of liquid. At the end, gently dry a small area around the mess as well.

Can you rub stains on upholstery with a sponge?

Do not rub the stain vigorously, especially on velvet, bouclé, and structural fabrics. Friction can push the mess deeper, spread it over a larger surface, or damage the material structure. Instead, apply a soft, light cloth and blot the mess.

What to do with a pen stain?

Stop before using alcohol, acetone, or any random solvent. Do a test of the upholstery cleaner in a hidden place, and then apply a damp cloth to the mark without rubbing. If the ink does not come off after a safe test, do not increase the cleaning force at the expense of the fabric.
