How much space does an armchair need? Distances and positioning

An armchair needs more space than its footprint. Check how much space to leave for a walkway, what distance to keep from the sofa, coffee table, and wall, and how to place it on a rug.

In the evening, you put your book down on the table, sit deep, and want to get up easily without moving other furniture. The answer is: leave at least 60 cm of free space for a walkway around the armchair, and keep 35-45 cm between the armchair and the coffee table. Therefore, how much space an armchair takes up includes not only its width and depth but also the space needed for sitting comfortably, turning, and moving around the living room.

An armchair can stand close to a sofa, creating a conversational arrangement, or separately by a window, where it becomes a spot for your morning coffee. In both cases, balance is the most important thing: the piece of furniture should provide support without blocking a walkway or looking like it was placed there by accident.

Before choosing a model, do not just measure the free floor space. Mark its outline with tape and add the usage zone. This will help you quickly assess whether the Amaro, Oval, or Gio armchair will fit the rhythm of your home and other furnishings.

How much space does an armchair take up in the living room?

Assume that an armchair needs space for its own bulk as well as movement around it. If you are placing it against a wall as an extra seat, it is usually enough to plan the space in front of it. If it is to stand in the center of the room or to the side of the sofa, you also need convenient access from one or two sides.

In a small living room, do not push the armchair immediately against every other piece of furniture. First, determine the main route: from the entrance to the sofa, window, or table. A 60 cm wide passageway is the minimum for one person, but if household members use this path frequently, leave 75-90 cm.

Relationship between furniture Recommended distance Why maintain it?
Armchair - sofa 60-90 cm Facilitates conversation and allows for free movement between seats.
Armchair - coffee table 35-45 cm Allows you to set down a mug or book without overreaching.
Armchair - wall 10-20 cm Provides visual breathing room and makes cleaning behind the furniture easier.
Armchair back - walkway 60 cm minimum, 75-90 cm comfortably Ensures a convenient passage without brushing against the backrest.
Armchair front - rug edge 15-25 cm extension under the front legs Connects the armchair to the lounge arrangement and stabilizes the layout.

If the armchair is facing the sofa, start with 90-120 cm between their front edges. Such a distance leaves room for a table and enables comfortable use of both seats. A tighter arrangement might work in a small room, but in that case, choose a visually lighter table and ensure it does not hinder getting up.

It is worth remembering that how much space an armchair takes up also depends on its function. A model intended solely for reading can stand closer to the wall. An armchair used daily during gatherings with loved ones should have more free floor space around its sides.

How to arrange an armchair in the living room?

Start the arrangement from the activity that most often happens in your home. If you sit by the window with a coffee in the morning, turn the armchair toward the light, but leave 35-45 cm for the Soho table so you can easily put down your cup. If you chat on the sofa in the evenings, position the armchair slightly at an angle, not perfectly parallel to the wall. Such an arrangement naturally opens up the lounge area.

The armchair does not have to be positioned symmetrically to the sofa. An interior looks calmer when the piece's position corresponds to its function: it can close off a corner of the lounge area, balance a larger sofa, or create a separate rest nook. Check out the available armchairs and compare their proportions with your room plan before making a decision.

Place the armchair 60-90 cm to the side of the sofa. This is a good starting point for two people who want to talk freely without needing to raise their voices. When you want to place a side table or Rulo pouf between the furniture, increase the distance to about 90 cm.

Leave 10-20 cm from the wall if there is no walkway behind the backrest. However, this is not a rigid rule for every interior. An armchair placed against a wall might need a larger gap if its form is meant to be visible from the sides or if you want to easily vacuum the floor behind it.

This solution will not work if the narrow passage behind the armchair leads to a frequently used balcony, kitchen, or dining room. In such a situation, do not place the furniture with its back to the traffic route. Move it closer to the lounge area or choose a layout where the passage runs along its side.

Rug, table, and proportions

A rug organizes the seating area, so the armchair should not stand next to it as a separate element. Extend the rug under the front legs of the armchair by 15-25 cm. This allows the sofa, armchair, and table to form a single composition, even if each piece has a different scale.

If you are placing an armchair next to a sofa, check the position of the coffee table. The top of the Soho table should be roughly 35-45 cm from the edge of the seat. Such a distance is convenient for daily evenings with a book, while leaving space for legs.

Also, pay attention to height. The surface of the coffee table should be close to the height of the seat or at most about 5 cm lower. A significantly higher table might overwhelm the light form of an armchair, while one that is too low makes setting items down difficult.

In a larger living room, a Rulo pouf can stand between the armchair and the sofa as an additional, flexible seat. Keep at least 30-40 cm around it so it can be moved without reorganizing the entire area. If space is tight, do not add a pouf just because it looks good on a floor plan—a clear path is more important than an extra element.

When choosing rugs, look primarily at the size of the entire area, not just the dimensions of the armchair itself. A rug that is too small will separate the furniture, and one that is too large might encroach on the traffic route. A well-chosen one starts under the sofa and covers at least the front part of the armchair.

Model and comfort of use

It is worth combining the choice of model with a layout plan. Amaro, Oval, and Gio can serve a similar function in the living room, but each one interacts differently in a composition due to its form, backrest line, and proportions. Measure the wall, mark the intended furniture outline, and then check the exact dimensions on the chosen product's page.

Technical details are important especially if the armchair is to be used daily. Before purchasing, check the type of fabric, construction, seat filling, and available wood finishes for the selected configuration. These elements affect the feel of sitting, ease of care, and how the furniture integrates with other equipment.

We design interiors so that materials build a coherent whole, not a collection of random elements. The same fabrics and wood finishes available in different pieces help you combine an armchair with a sofa, Rulo pouf, and table without an impression of excess. Also check out the tables if you are looking for a tabletop that fits the spot by your armchair.

However, do not choose the form alone without trying it out. A deep, soft seat can be very pleasant while resting, but it might not always be comfortable if you often work with a laptop or need to get up easily. Free fabric samples will allow you to see the color in your own lighting, and in the seven IWC HOME showrooms in Wrocław, Warsaw, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Gliwice, and Łódź, you can sit on selected models.

If you are wondering how much space an armchair takes up in relation to a sofa and table, draw the layout to scale. A simple plan with the dimensions of walls, doors, and windows is enough. Such a drawing will quickly show if you are maintaining the 60 cm for a walkway and if the table is not getting too close to the seat.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimeters should I leave around an armchair?

Leave a minimum of 60 cm of free space where you need to pass behind or next to an armchair. For greater comfort in a main traffic route, plan for 75-90 cm. Between an armchair and a wall, 10-20 cm is usually sufficient.

What distance between an armchair and a sofa is comfortable?

Keep 60-90 cm between the side of the armchair and the sofa. If a Rulo pouf or a small table is standing in this space, increase the distance to about 90 cm. When positioning opposite a sofa, plan for 90-120 cm between the front edges of the furniture.

How much space should I leave between an armchair and a table?

The most comfortable distance between the edge of the seat and the table is 35-45 cm. It allows you to comfortably reach for a mug, remote, or book while not restricting legroom. This rule also works well for the Soho table.

Should an armchair stand on a rug?

Yes, in a lounge area, it is worth tucking the rug under the front legs of the armchair by 15-25 cm. This visually connects the armchair with the sofa and table. If the rug is small, do not place only the armchair on it, as the composition might look inconsistent.
