Swivel chair in the living room - comfort or just design?

A swivel chair allows you to turn towards a conversation, a window, or a screen without moving the furniture. Check when it makes sense, how much space it needs, and how to arrange it in the living room.

When you sit by the window with coffee in the morning and turn towards a conversation or a book in the evening, a swivel armchair provides a level of comfort that a standard fixed seat cannot. It is best placed in a lounge area, with free space for rotation and a passageway at least 70 cm wide. This is a functional solution, provided you match its scale to the room and do not obstruct everyday traffic with it.

A swivel base is more than just a visual detail. It allows you to face the sofa, coffee table, fireplace, window, or the person sitting next to you without moving the furniture. In a living room that serves multiple roles at once, this small movement makes it easier to utilize the entire space.

At IWC HOME, we design furniture for the quiet rhythm of a home: for conversations, relaxation, and moments when you want to sit comfortably without cutting yourself off from what is happening around you. Browse IWC HOME armchairs and treat your selection as a decision about how you will use your living room, not just about the look of a single piece of furniture.

When does a swivel armchair make sense?

You gain the most when one part of the living room has more than one focal point. The sofa faces the television, there is a bookcase nearby, and a spot for morning tea is created by the window. A swivel seat allows you to freely change your perspective without dragging the chair across the floor or rearranging the entire layout.

Imagine an evening when one person is reading by a lamp, while the other is chatting with household members on the sofa. In a classic armchair, you have to choose one fixed direction. In a model with a swivel base, a slight movement is enough to remain part of the conversation or turn toward your own zone of silence.

It is also a good choice for an open-plan living room connected to the dining area. The seat can support the conversation zone at one moment and turn toward the table during dinner. However, avoid placing it where every rotation will interfere with the path to the kitchen, the balcony, or a traffic lane near the door.

Living room situation What does a swivel base offer? What should you watch out for?
Conversation zone by the sofa Allows you to turn toward several people without moving the furniture. Leave space between the armchair and the table to stand up comfortably.
Corner by the window Makes it easier to switch between looking out the window and into the living room. Do not block access to curtains, balcony doors, or radiators.
Living room with a TV Allows you to turn the seat toward the screen only when you need it. Check if the rotation causes the armrest to hit the wall.
Small living room Can replace two differently positioned lounge chairs. This solution will not work if there is not at least 70 cm left for a passage after placing the furniture.

The most important thing is an honest assessment of the square footage. The swivel function requires space not only for the armchair itself but also for the movement around it. Measure the wall, mark the planned outline of the furniture with tape, and check if you can walk past it without twisting your body. A comfortable passage is usually about 90 cm wide, and 70 cm should be treated as a reasonable minimum.

Comfort starts with the construction

Whether a seat will be comfortable after half an hour or a long evening depends on more than just the ability to rotate. Check the proportions of the backrest, seat depth, height of the armrests, and how the base operates. Ask an advisor about the construction, type of filling, and the mechanism used in your chosen configuration, as these elements influence the perception of stability and softness.

In IWC HOME collections, it is worth looking at the Amaro, Morosa, Gio, and Boo models. Compare them not only on screen, but above all through the prism of how you want to sit: more upright during a conversation, with back support while reading, or more relaxed during downtime. Each of these scenarios requires a different ratio between the backrest, seat, and armrests.

The upholstery material also changes the perception of the furniture. Velvet provides a smoother, softer-to-the-touch surface that reacts subtly to light. Bouclé has a more distinct structure, thanks to which the armchair can introduce additional depth to a calm interior without the need for many decorations.

Do not judge the fabric based solely on a photo. The color of velvet may look different in the morning in cool light than in the evening by a lamp, and bouclé will only show its texture up close. Order free fabric samples via the form on the website and view them at home in your own lighting, next to your floor, walls, and curtains.

If consistency is important to you, also check the oak finishes on wooden elements and their relationship with other furniture in the room. The same fabrics and wood finishes on different pieces of furniture help build a cohesive whole without accidental contrasts. This does not mean, however, that everything must be identical: one bouclé armchair can easily coexist with a velvet sofa if the colors have a similar temperature.

A deep, soft seat also has its limitations. It provides pleasant support while resting, but it can make working on a laptop or eating at a low table difficult. If you plan to use the armchair for short-term work regularly, sit in it before buying and check if it is easy to stand up and if your back has stable support.

Intentional placement

The simplest rule is to position the armchair slightly to the side of the sofa, not perfectly parallel and not with its back to the entire room. Such a position invites conversation while still allowing for the benefit of the swivel. If you want to rethink the relationship between larger seating options, take a look at our sofas for the living area and choose the layout for the entire lounge section.

Maintain enough distance from a side table so that you can put down a cup without leaning over, but without needing to stand up. A tabletop works best when it is at seat height or up to about 5 cm higher. Do not place it too close: the swivel movement should remain natural, and your knees should not hit the edge of the table.

A rug helps to visually gather the lounge area. Extend it from under the front part of the armchair by at least 20-30 cm so the furniture doesn't look like it was placed next to a random piece of fabric. If the base rotates over a rug, also check if the pile restricts smooth movement.

In a larger living room, you can place the armchair closer to a window or a library to create a separate reading zone. In a smaller room, it is better to treat it as a full-fledged element of the sofa arrangement, rather than an extra piece of furniture squeezed into a free corner. View the armchair models in relation to the actual floor plan of the room, not just the empty space seen in product photos.

You do not have to copy a ready-made arrangement. Think about where your household members actually sit: whether closer to the light, for conversation, or facing the screen. Only then choose the position from which the swivel will provide a daily benefit. When the living room is based on a larger, evolving composition, it is also helpful to look at modular sofas that you can develop along with the changing needs of your home.

Frequently asked questions

Is a swivel armchair for the living room comfortable for everyday use?

Yes, if its proportions match your way of sitting and there is free space around the base. Comfort is built by the backrest, filling, seat height, and fabric, while the swivel makes it easy to change direction without moving the furniture. Before making a decision, sit in the chosen model and perform a few full rotations.

How much space should I leave around the armchair?

Leave at least 70 cm for a passage, and about 90 cm will ensure significantly more freedom in daily use. Take into account not only the width of the chair but also the armrests, tables, rugs, and the path to the door. Before you order, mark the outline of the furniture on the floor with tape.

Should I choose velvet or bouclé for an armchair?

Velvet is a good choice if you are looking for a smooth, soft surface and a calm interplay of light. Choose bouclé if you want to introduce a more tangible structure and visual depth. Order samples of both fabrics and compare them in daylight and evening light.

Where can I view the Amaro, Morosa, Gio, and Boo models?

You can sit in the selected models at one of seven IWC HOME showrooms: in Wrocław, Warsaw, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Gliwice, and Łódź. A visit allows you to check the feel of the seat, the backrest height, and the look of the velvet or bouclé up close. Regarding available configurations, speak with an advisor at +48 530 457 457, Monday through Saturday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM.

Browse the armchair collection and choose a model that leaves space in your living room for free movement and calm rest.
